2. Green Chef

chef's table

Variety of Meals

Green Chef describe themselves as being “your Sous Chef”, which I suppose makes sense if you’re down with these various chefs and culinary terms.

Personally, I just enjoy getting a bunch of pre-portioned ingredients because I’m lazy and don’t like cooking.

There are menus for multiple different dietary restrictions, including an extensive menu for vegans. The menus change weekly, which is a great way to keep things fresh and interesting.

Sample Meals

  • Vegan Crab CakesTempeh Crab Cakes with basil-lemon aioli
  • Moroccan Cauliflower – featuring chickpeas, turmeric, and quinoa
  • Pesto Pasta Primavera – featuring seasonal spring vegetables
  • Jamaican Pineapple Fried Rice – with sweet potato and collard greens

The recipes from Green Chef involve fresh ingredients and are very easy to follow.

Pricing varies wildly depending on your location, plan, and the types of meals that you want to be delivered, but suffice it to say that Green Chef’s healthy eating home delivery service is priced very competitively.

The average price of each vegan meal is $11.99 per serving.

Packaging and delivery

You can choose to have your food delivered every 1, 2, or 4 weeks depending on your preferences. You can also pause your orders at any time if you’re going to be away.

The boxes are temperature-controlled so that your food is at the appropriate temperature, and all meals are color-coded so that they’re easy to sort and identify at a glance.

3. Sakara

salad

Variety of Meals

Sakara is definitely the fashionable magazine-friendly version of a meal delivery service. Their website looks more like it should be selling face cream than salads.

In fact, they claim that their food can even reduce bloating and “improve skin clarity”, so maybe they should be selling cosmetics after all.

Their plans include the “10 Day Reset” for new dieters, the “Best Body Challenge” meal plan and the “Detox" meal plan.

It seems like this service is heavily focused on losing weight and detoxing… it comes across a bit fad-ish to me.

Sample meals

  • Beauty Blend Salad with avocado, berries, and “superfood green dressing”
  • Sakara Glow Granola – served with pink “silk mylk”… whatever that is
  • Thai Burger – sweet potato burger with root vegetable “fries” and salad
  • Chia and Coconut Protein Waffles – served with maple syrup

All of Sakara’s meals are made from clean ingredients, featuring plant-based organic ingredients which are designed to be healthy and nutritious.

Pricing

A 5-day meal plan of breakfast, lunch, and dinner will cost you a whopping $349.00 for a weekly subscription.

This is obviously the kind of thing which is only available to people with tons of disposable income.

Packaging and delivery

Sakara meals are delivered to your door on a weekly basis, coming in a cooled bag or box depending on your location.

PROS

  • check
    Clean ingredients
  • check
    Organic non-GMO meals
  • check
    Tailored dieting plans
  • check
    Detox options

CONS

  • Heavily marketed toward women/beauty
  • ban
    Very expensive

4. Terra’s Kitchen

Variety of meals

Terra’s Kitchen features a selection of DIY recipes, smoothies, and ready-to-eat salads, giving you a bunch of options to peruse when deciding what to eat for the week.

The great thing about Terra’s Kitchen is that you can order individual meals if you like, allowing you to try their food before committing to a weekly meal plan.

Terra’s Kitchen has an admittedly limited Vegan range, but if you like a few of their plant-based options, it may be worth ordering them in every now and then.

Sample meals

  • Berry Medley – selection of fresh strawberries and blueberries
  • Green Protein Smoothie – kale, banana, apple, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds and more

5. Purple Carrot

Variety of meals

Purple Carrot specialize in plant-based meal delivery, seeming to have an affection for plants which is unmatched by most other services I’ve come across.

There’s even a section on their website called “Why Plants?” where they talk about all the benefits of plant-eating. (1)

They have Japanese, Italian, and Middle Eastern culinary influences, as well as many others, with their revolving weekly menu keeping things interesting for regular customers.

Sample meals

  • White Bean Hummus Flatbreadwith shaved asparagus and cashew pesto
  • Yam and Shitake Salad – Japanese warm salad with an orange peanut dressing
  • White Bean Hemp Cakes – with Cajun mayo and kale coleslaw
  • Chevron Circle Right
Stuffed Sweet Potato – sweet potato stuffed with miso tahini and chickpea salad
healthy foods

Pricing

You can choose from “Quick and Easy”, “High Protein”, and “Chef’s Choice”. The plates cost $12 each, which is on the cheaper end of the vegan food delivery spectrum.

Packaging and delivery

The ingredients from Purple Carrot all come in appropriate packaging, although it should be noted that their website implies that the food is not freezable, so you must eat it in order of what foods will spoil first.

For example, they recommend eating dishes with leafy green vegetables first, as these tend to spoil the quickest. Do bear this in mind when ordering your meals for the week.

PROS

  • Varied weekly meals
  • Fast and responsive customer service
  • Tons of nutritional vegan options
  • check
    Easy to pause deliveries

CONS

6. Hungry Root

Hungry Root vegan meal delivery service

Variety of meals

The amount of variety at Hungry Root is dizzying… you want dairy-free nut-free vegetarian dinners? You got it.

You want an organic gluten-free soy-free vegan lunch? No problem.

They seem to be really on it with the dietary requirements on these subscriptions.

The only thing about Hungry Root is it’s less about meal plans and more about giving you a bunch of fresh ingredients to play around with.

They do have recipes you can follow, but you’re encouraged to make your own choices.

Sample meals

Chickpea Pesto – brilliant dip for breadsticks or pita
Black Bean Brownie Batter – vegan brownie batter for dairy-free brownie goodness
Braised Lemongrass Tofu Nuggets – aromatic and versatile meat substitute
Superblend Salad – healthy mix of cabbage, carrot, beansprouts and more

If there’s 2 of you, you’ll pay $99 for 16 items, and if you’re a family, you’ll pay $129 per week for 21 food items.

Packaging and delivery

Hungry Root drivers deliver between 9am and 9pm, which is quite a large delivery window.

However, they use ice when transporting the food and leave it in insulated packaging for you to pick up, so they suggest unpacking it as quickly as possible.

Ground shipping is free, although air shipping comes with a charge of $10.

PROS

  • Encourages creativity with food
  • Create your own healthy meals
  • Adjust meals to your preferences
  • check
    Cancel at any time

You can also watch this review by Youtuber Parejeda on her experience in trying out Hungry Root for one week.

7. Epicured

chef preparing food

Variety of meals

Epicured has a specialty for healthy foods which are gluten-free and low in FODMAPs, which stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides Disaccharides Monosaccharides and Polyols. (2)

I can see why they went for the acronym.

The company deliver throughout the North-eastern United States, so they’re not available nationwide, yet their meals require no cooking.

Yes, these home chef-prepared meals are approved by leading (or so they claim) doctors and dieticians.

Sample meals

Tofu Tikka Masala – creamy, sweet, and spicy, just as it should be
Warm Autumn Salad – autumnal medley of kabocha, carrots, broccoli, and more
Dragon Fruit Smoothie – dragon fruit with strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries

Pricing

The pricing varies because you can customize your meal plan for each week.

Although this is great for allowing you to change things up according to your tastes, it does reduce the convenience element of these food delivery services.

Epicured claim that their average meal costs around $15.

Packaging and delivery

For people who live in the New York Metro area, there are deliveries available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

If you live outside of the Metro area, then Wednesday is the only available delivery day.

PROS

  • Ready-to-eat chef-prepared meals
  • Numerous vegan options
  • Brilliant flavors
  • check
    Customizable meals

CONS

  • Limited to the North-east
  • ban
Only cheap if you eat out a lot

8. Urban Remedy

vegan food

Variety of meals

Urban Remedy are very keen on letting you know that Kate Upton likes them.

KATE UPTON, YOU GUYS. Jeez, aren’t you just so darn excited about eating the same food as Kate Upton? You should be.

Cindy Crawford even gets a mention.

There are many vegan options available from Urban Remedy, although they don’t advertise them as such, which makes them hard to pick out among the bunch.

Sample meals

Sweet Potato Hummus and Veggies – the greatest of vegan snacks
Green Tea Leaf Salad – comes with tasty salad dressing and nut mixture
Herbal Slimming Tea – caffeine-free tea which reduces your hunger and bloating

Pricing

Most of the meal plans are 3 days long, which is not ideal if you’re looking for a long-term food delivery solution.

The prices for these 3-day cleanses vary from $165 to $220 depending on which plan you go for. It’s definitely not the cheapest solution.

Packaging and delivery

If you’re in the US but outside of California, then you must place an order worth a minimum of $95 to be eligible for delivery.

Overnight guaranteed delivery can be made to anywhere in the United States from Tuesday through to Saturday.

PROS

  • Good for detoxes
  • Cleanses your body (supposedly)
  • Many plant-based foods

These healthy professionally-prepared meals are designed to provide you with convenient “heat and eat” nutrition, and their standard “plant-based” plan comes with a wide selection of vegan dishes for those eating a plant-based diet.

The standard delivery day for meals is Fridays, and you will have to pay a fee if you want to change this and have your meals arrive on a different day.

PROS

  • Delicious vegan meals
  • Cheaper than Sun Basket
  • Lots of variety in dishes
  • check
    Good customer service

CONS

  • Not too eco-friendly
  • ban
    Some users experienced order problems

My #1 Recommended Vegan Meal Delivery Service

Looking for a cheap and high-quality alternative to Sun Basket and Hello Fresh?

Out of these top brands, I would personally recommend Veestro as the better vegan meal delivery service.

Veestro have a bunch of different cuisines and fusion cooking styles to choose from, helping to keep things interesting in the kitchen.

The food quality was top-notch and ordering online was fairy simple and there wasn't any hidden costs (like what other companies do).

Overall, this is a great choice for vegans and vegetarians - even for non-vegans looking for ways to spice up their weight loss program.
