The Tastiest Jack in the Box Vegan Options
Fast food can be a minefield for plant-based eaters because so few restaurants have dedicated vegan or vegetarian options.
Fortunately, some menu items at fast-food restaurants are vegan by nature, some are accidentally vegan, and others can be vegan with one or two small changes to how you order them.
Jack in the Box doesn’t have a plant-based sandwich option on the menu. They tested the Unchicken sandwich, a plant-based chicken sandwich similar to KFC’s Beyond Chicken patty, in a few markets in 2020.
The restaurant also offered the Impossible Burger at Phoenix, AZ, locations as a trial at the end of 2021. The Impossible Burger is a vegan meat patty popular with plant-based eaters. Burger King began offering it on their menu in 2019. But, there’s no word whether a vegan sandwich will become part of the Jack in the Box menu anytime soon.
You won’t find many Jack in the Box vegan options, but you can make adaptions to menu items if you’re craving fast food.
Jack in the Box Vegan Menu Items
Aside from drinks and condiments, the list of Jack in the Box vegan options isn’t very long. The options include:
- French fries
- Seasoned curly fries
- Hash browns
- Tree Top applesauce pouch
These menu items aren’t vegan but can be with a few changes:
- Side salad
- Jack’s Teriyaki Bowl
- Chicken Club Salad
- Southwest Chicken Salad
- Grilled Chicken Salad
Not all vegan options are healthy or low-fat, but they don’t contain animal ingredients.
French Fries and Seasoned Curly Fries
Most fast-food french fries are vegan. They use plant oils instead of the beef fat many restaurants used years ago.
The seasoned curly fries at Jack in the Box are among some of the tastiest fast-food fries for vegans because the seasoning and the shape make them unique and different from regular fries.
These curly fries get a sprinkle of spices like garlic and onion powder to give them extra flavor, and the shape makes them fun to eat.
Like all fast-food fries, this choice contains a lot of oil from the original processing before they’re frozen and then in the deep-fryer. The regular fries provide 300 calories for a small, 430 calories for a medium, and 550 calories for a large order. Almost half of those calories come from fat.
The curly fries in small, medium, and large orders contain 280, 430, and 480 calories, respectively, with over half the calories from fat. The curly shape gives the potato more surface area to absorb oil as they fry.
Fast-food french fries aren’t the healthiest option, but if you have to choose between them, the classic fries contain fewer calories and less fat overall.
The fried potato patties served during breakfast hours don’t contain egg or milk. If you have to make a full breakfast from the menu, unfortunately, hash browns are the only cooked option they offer during breakfast hours that qualifies as vegan.
You could pair it with applesauce to add a healthier option, but it’s still more of a snack than a meal. One hash brown contains 190 calories, with 110 of those from fat, which doesn’t leave room for healthy fat sources in a meal.
Tree Top Applesauce Pouch
The Jack in the Box applesauce pouch contains 45 calories with no fat or added sugar. The serving is child-sized at just over three ounces of applesauce.
It’s a healthy option to supplement a meal or have a small snack anytime.
Side Salad With Adjustments
Salad is the healthiest of the Jack in the Box vegan options. Their side salad has 115 calories and contains:
- Romaine and iceberg lettuce
- Shredded carrots
- Sliced cucumbers
- Grape tomatoes
To keep the salad vegan, order it without the croutons, which contain dairy. It also comes with ranch dressing, which isn’t vegan, so choose a sauce like low-fat balsamic dressing.
Jack’s Teriyaki Bowl With Adjustments
This teriyaki bowl comes with grilled chicken, making it unsuitable for vegetarians or vegans.
Order it without the chicken and ask for extra vegetables to make this dish vegan-friendly. You’ll get a bowl of white rice, vegetables like broccoli and carrots, and teriyaki sauce to pull it together.
The bowl ordered this way is one of the healthiest menu items and, ordered without the chicken, one of the best Jack in the Box vegan options.
Chicken Club Salad With Adjustments
You can order Jack in the Box’s chicken salads without the animal products to get a heartier salad than the side salad. The three chicken salads cost the same amount but have different ingredients you’ll need to tell them to hold.
Depending on the price in your area, it might cost less to order three side salads without the croutons or ranch instead of one of these chicken salads, so check before you order.
This club salad comes with chicken, cheddar cheese, bacon, ranch dressing, and croutons. Tell them to hold those items to make it vegan and ask for extra veggies. You’ll get a large, healthy salad with cucumbers, grape tomatoes, iceberg lettuce, and romaine.
Southwest Chicken Salad With Adjustments
You can turn this into a vegan salad with romaine, iceberg lettuce, black beans, spicy corn sticks, grape tomatoes, and roasted corn.
Order it without the chicken, cheddar cheese, croutons, or creamy southwest dressing. The corn and beans make this salad a great choice because they make it a heartier meal than lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers alone.
Grilled Chicken Salad With Adjustments
The difference between this salad and the Chicken Club Salad is that this one contains shredded carrots. You’ll get carrots, the two types of lettuce, grape tomatoes, and cucumbers.
A low-fat balsamic dressing comes with this salad, and you don’t have to substitute. The vinaigrette is naturally vegan.
Vegan Beverages at Jack in the Box
All of the soft drinks at Jack in the Box are vegan and contain no animal products. The soft drinks can vary by location, but they offer a combination of the following beverages:
- Barqs Root Beer
- Coca-Cola Fuze Iced Tea
- Diet Coke
- Dr. Pepper
- Diet Dr. Pepper
- Fanta Orange
- Fanta Strawberry
- Gold Peak iced tea
- Hi-C Fruit Punch
- Jumpin’ Jack Splash
- Diet Jumpin’ Jack Splash
In addition to sodas, they serve other drinks that are vegan, including:
- Regular and decaf coffee
- Dasani bottled water
- Minute Maid apple juice
- Minute Maid lemonade
- Simply Orange brand orange juice
Other beverages like milk and the Sweet Cream iced coffee flavors aren’t vegan. They also offer a salted caramel mocha coffee creamer you can add to your coffee, but it contains milk and is not vegan-friendly.
If you want the healthiest choice, skip the sugary soda and enjoy water, coffee, or juice.
Jack in the Box Vegan Sauces, Dressings, and Condiments
Some condiments, sauce packets, and dressings are vegan. Here’s a list of the vegan-friendly Jack in the Box condiments:
- Frank’s RedHot Buffalo dipping sauce
- Sweet N’ Sour dipping sauce
- Teriyaki dipping sauce
- Low Fat Balsamic Vinaigrette dressing
- Fire-roasted salsa
- Gold-n-Sweet whipped spread
- Pancake syrup
- Strawberry jam
- Grape jelly
- Hot taco sauce
- Kikkoman soy sauce
Non-Vegan Items To Avoid
There are no Jack in the Box vegan options for dessert. All of their sweet menu items contain milk.
The churros might trick some people into thinking it’s a vegan option. Taco Bell offers vegan cinnamon twists similar to churros, so it’s easy to think these churros might be, too. Sadly, these churros contain eggs and milk.
Many people, especially new vegans, might also assume that since the french fries are vegan, the onion rings probably are too. But most prepared onion rings use milk in the batter, and these rings are no exception.
Stick with the french fries if you want something deep-fried as a treat, or better yet, order one of the salads without the animal products and get the vegan balsamic dressing. This salad makes a much fresher fast-food meal without the unhealthy amounts of fat.
The list of Jack in the Box vegan options is short, without many choices except fried potatoes or salads. The exception is the Jack’s Teriyaki Bowl which, ordered without chicken, provides rice, veggies, and a vegan teriyaki sauce. You can add in a pouch of applesauce if you want something sweet after the meal.
The teriyaki sauce serves as a dressing for the salad, which you can mix into the bowl to bulk it up. Any beverage except milk, milkshakes, their iced coffee flavors, or coffee with their flavored creamer works well with this healthy vegan meal.
If you have to eat on the run, other fast-food restaurants offer dedicated vegan menu items like vegan meat burgers and vegan chicken sandwiches. Those options aren’t particularly healthy, but they make a solid meal and shouldn’t affect your health when eaten in moderation.
