Although he is associated with truckloads of bands, Travis Barker is most famous for being the drummer of one of the biggest pop-punk bands in the world - Blink 182. Not only that, he is a ridiculously fit individual. His job requires a great deal of stamina, especially when on tour.

So how does he manage to keep the beat while operating entirely on plant power?

The Blink-182 drummer decided to switch to a completely vegan diet after making a promise to be a better version of himself.

He had brushes with drug abuse, led a hectic rock star lifestyle, and even survived a plane crash (yeah, that’s some superhero stuff). No wonder he had to make changes in various aspects of his life.

But, luckily, adopting an entirely plant-based and gluten-free diet seems to have helped him a lot in that endeavor.

Interestingly enough, Barker has been vegetarian since he was 13 years old, so meat was off the menu for a large portion of his life.

But now that he has made the switch to veganism, he feels that he has much more energy, which coming from a drummer is astonishing in and of itself. They are all high on energy.

Why Did He Go Vegan?

In interviews, the Blink-182 drummer is quite vocal about the endless amounts of energy he feels due to his vegan eating. Being healthy and performing at the best of his ability seems to be his primary motivator. Still, given that he was a vegetarian from 13, such ethics seem to have been present for the most of his life.

After his plane crash, he had to eat meat for protein during his long recovery. Seems that it was the only thing available at the hospital. But he stomached what he could and decided to go full-out vegan once he got out.

What Is His Vegan Diet Like?

Eating well from the comfort of your own home is easy - you're in full control of your routine. But how does a successful musician like Barker manage his vegan diet while on tour?

"It's a lot easier to eat vegan than it used to be, vegan restaurants are everywhere now, especially in Los Angeles."

The drummer says that he snacks on berries when he’s on the road, eating many strawberries, blueberries, and acai berries. He also brings his Juicero on the road with him to make awesome juices. And if he is feeling peckish while touring, he opens up the Happy Cow app to find vegan-friendly restaurants nearby.

  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp almond butter

What Is His Workout Routine?

Barker is your run-of-the-mill drummer's drummer, with Rolling Stone naming him "the first punk superstar drummer."

He is respected as a session musician and for giving phenomenal live performances, which are uncommon traits for punk rockers.

It takes a tremendous amount of energy and stamina to keep up with his hectic schedule, given that he plays with and rehearses for multiple bands and shows.

"I'm all about building myself up as much as possible before I go on tour, keeping a normal schedule on the road is impossible."

He works with fitness trainer Don Brooks on what they like to call tempo training. This primarily involves doing supersets or circuits of push-ups, pull-ups, dips, or boxing, all to a metronome or favorite music. He likes to mix it up and keep it interesting, but the primary principles are this: you push yourself hard, never slow down, and it always has to be on beat.

The chef Tal Ronnen has created an incredibly rich and varied menu that attracts many celebrities to the vegan restaurant.

This award winning drummer is a prime example of someone who is at the top of his or her game. Now, we cannot say for certain that his plant-based diet is solely responsible for all his successes, but being vegan seems to have made a huge impact on his life and career.

Few professional musicians work as tirelessly or with such a busy schedule as Barker does. No wonder he is widely rated as one of the best there is.
