Gobble Review
Is This Food Delivery Service Any Good?

I need to preface this review with a confession. I genuinely like cooking and eating. I don’t even mind washing up. But EVERYTHING that happens before, I can live without.

Shopping? Chopping? Carving? Cleaning? Measuring? Forget about it. I want to eat delicious, healthy meals, and I like the satisfaction of knowing that I made it. Or at least, participated in a large chunk of the preparation process.

Gobble was launched with people like me in mind. People who want to step in at the last few minutes and take credit for doing something awesome that actually required a ton of prep work they had nothing to do with at all.

What Is Gobble?

gobble logo and food

Gobble is a food delivery service that includes what they call “all the prep work.” They employ chefs to do all of those things I detest about cooking, including compiling the recipes.

A gobble meal kit contains everything you need to prepare a fresh, delicious dinner in a mere 15 minutes. Each meal kit also comes with recipe cards, so you don’t have to wing it, or call your mom to find out what “sauteing” means.

For those of us you who pay a little more attention to the food you put into your bodies, Gobble has you covered. Their “classic dinner” recipes comprise only fresh, seasonal ingredients, but it doesn’t cater to specific diets or eating plans.

Gobble does, however, offer a low-calorie, low-carb option. This plan promises lean proteins, healthy fats, no grains, and only 600 calories per meal.

All you need to enjoy a gobble meal is access to pots, pans, woks, cutlery, and a mouth. Oh, and 15 – 20 minutes of free time to cook. Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, let’s dive a little deeper into their service with this review and see if they deliver on these promises.

3 Benefits of Gobble Meal Delivery Service

So, after trying their service for two weeks, and doing a ton of research online, reading Gobble reviews written by other customers, I’m ready to talk with authority on what they do right.

1. Perfectly Prepped Ingredients

What Gobble lacks in some areas (we’ll get there, be patient), they make up for with convenience. Like they promise on their site, ingredients are perfectly prepped. Every item was meticulously chopped, peeled, and diced. As they claimed, prep work was literally zero for each meal I made.

Cooking the meals also didn’t require a spectrum of equipment rivaling the Top Chef kitchen. At most, I used two pots or pans simultaneously. Meal kits are clearly chosen to be made with as little effort as possible. I wouldn’t go so far as to call the cooking process kid-friendly, but rest assured that you won’t need to have much skill in the kitchen to whip up something delicious.

2. Diversity of Meals

Just because Gobble’s primary selling point is convenience doesn’t mean you’re going to be eating a boiled potato with a side of beans. When it comes to flavor and diversity, Gobble brings their A-game. From what I experienced, there were at least five different ingredients per serving.

A lot of thought goes into a particular recipe, and it shows. Their meals are not short on components that work very well together. While not exactly “gourmet,” their menu is contemporary without being pretentious.

Here are some examples of what they’re serving:

  • Sirloin Steak with Smashed Potatoes & Three Peppercorn Sauce
  • Chimichurri Chicken with Sautéed Vegetables
  • Thai Pineapple Red Curry with Shrimp & Jasmine Rice

Erm… yum, right?

3. Great Number of Options

Unlike some meal delivery services that have set menus each week, Gobble allows their customers to choose whatever they want from a surprisingly large selection of meal kits.

Their website clearly shows the options available for a particular week and even lets you take a gander at the following four weeks’ offerings.

I have to admit that the number of options was a big bonus for me. As you’ll know by now, I’m quite particular about nutrition, and there are certain ingredients I won’t touch. Regardless, I felt that, between the two meal plans, there was never a shortage of meals that suited my needs.

Some high-falutin’ customers with more refined palettes can also choose meals that contain ingredients like scallops or lamb shank, just be prepared to pay a little extra for these.

When selecting a particular meal kit, you also have the option for some exciting add-ons per serving. For a couple of dollars more, you’ll be able to select from several additional ingredients to bulk up a particular meal.

There’s even the odd dessert option. I opted for gooey chocolate chip cookies, which were exceptionally good, even though I felt a tad guilty after eating way more of them than I should have.

Summary of Gobble’s Pros

  • Great option as a first-time meal delivery service.
  • Huge variety of recipes on their two menus.
  • The ability to include add-ons to every meal.
  • Meal kit delivery happens in sealed containers, keeping the food fresh and cold.
  • There’s a great variety of ingredients per serving.

7 Gobble Shortfalls

gobble box other side

No review would be complete without taking a look at where the company can improve. Let’s get pedantic and see where Gobble can raise their game a little.

1. It’s Expensive

Convenience and quality recipes come at a cost. Expect to pay a little more for Gobble than many of their competitors. Blue Apron offers a very similar service at a more reasonable price.

Shipping also isn’t free, which is kind of a bummer, since there are companies (like Trifecta) who don’t charge extra and ship nationwide.

2. Gobble Doesn’t Cater For Specific Diets

While Gobble’s priorities definitely include offering nutritions, healthy meals, customers who follow very regimented eating plans will have to look elsewhere. If you’re a vegan or follow a paleo or keto diet, Gobble simply isn’t for you.

The same applies to those with serious food allergies. There are some gluten-free options on their menu, and meals containing nuts are identified, but Gobble makes it clear that people who need to pay incredibly close attention to their food are not their target market.

Having said this, each meal is clearly identified as containing ingredients that certain eaters may find problematic. Meals containing dairy, wheat, nuts, shellfish, etc., are very easy to spot and avoid.

3. They Don’t Deliver Nationwide

While this wasn’t a dealbreaker for me, it will be for residents of Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska. Sorry guys. While I enjoyed their meal delivery service and found it extremely convenient, I wouldn’t say it’s worth relocating for.

4. Packaging Isn’t Sustainable

I found this particularly frustrating. When opening the first box I received, I was honestly quite shocked. Meal kits are shipped in a container that keeps items cold and fresh, but there’s a troubling amount of plastic involved.

If you’re someone who takes sustainable packaging seriously, the Gobble box and its contents are going to be very problematic.

5. The “15 Minutes” Promise Might Be a Little Unrealistic

Again, this wasn’t a dealbreaker for me, but I found that most meals took me closer to 25 minutes to prepare. Their “15 minute” claim is likely based on how long a pro chef, or someone very familiar with a particular recipe, would take to cook it.

6. There’s Not Much Flexibility in Delivery Composition

Gobble is a dinner focused service. While many people are firm believers that any meal can be breakfast, they’re not the typical readers of a site named “Vegan Liftz.”

Almost all of the dinner kits consist of food typically associated with your evening meal – meaning that customers don’t have the option to select multiple meals per day.

Furthermore, Gobble only has two subscription options when it comes to the number of people a delivery caters for. The only choices you have here are the “Dinner for Two” or “Dinner for Four” plans.

On top of that, Gobble offers only three or four meals per person in each delivery – which isn’t ideal for customers who want to stock up for a whole week.

7. There’s no 24-hour Customer Service

For a food delivery service at this cost, I expect a certain level of support. This includes the option of contacting the people responsible for feeding me at any time of the day.

Sadly, the Gobble support center operates during very specific times: 8 am to 8 pm during the week, and 8 am to 4 pm during weekends (PST).

Would We Recommend Gobble Meals?

So, what’s the outcome of my review? Personally, I wouldn’t continue using Gobble. But that’s only because I prefer a service that caters to more specific dietary regimes. I suspect many of our readers would feel the same.

Simply put, for the cost of their service, I’d at least expect a vegan menu. A paleo or keto option would also be welcome additions.

For a meal delivery service that has more specific dietary needs covered, I can’t recommend Trifecta Nutrition highly enough. There’s so much to love about their service.

Here’s a quick summary of why Trifecta is my recommendation:

  • Free delivery across the entire United States.
  • All meals are pre-prepared and only require you to heat before you eat.
  • Trifecta takes nutrition VERY seriously. Their target market includes bodybuilders and other athletes.
  • Their meals are all fully organic and gluten-free.
  • If you factor in the free shipping, their prices are very affordable.

There’s a lot to like about Gobble – all of it covered in this review. But if you’re taking fitness and nutrition seriously, Trifecta Nutrition is the way to go..
